Deep Question / House of the Scorpion.

If human cloning becomes a common practice, would the clones become a new ethnic group? Would American clones have to fight for their constitutional rights such as other groups have in American history?

  1. "Clone-Americans"? I am sure they would have many derogatory nicknames. Look for the "clone-American Union" coming soon.

Actually, Clones have been used very frequently in Sci-fi novels to reflect the struggles of slaves, be they African slaves in America or the Jews in Egypt or any other historical context.

  2. I think in society we have an ever evolving perception of "us and them" The us has changed as well as the them. It has been (and sometimes continues to be) "White and Black" "Christian and non-Christian" "Straight and Gay" "Man and Woman" As our society evolves and the "us" becomes larger(more inclusive?. It is not clear who the next "them" will be. I think if clones become a part of our world, there will definatly be a transition period. If you are interested in this topic, one of my favorite shows: Battlestar Galactica explores this issue of the "other" rather than clones, however, it is robot people.

  3. I think that if cloning did become a common practice, they would go through a lot of the struggles other minorities have gone through in our country. They would have to fight for their rights and they would have to prove to others that they are actual humans, just made a different way. I think that they would be slaves for a while, then they would probably be discriminated against followed by finally getting the freedom they deserve. It would be pretty interesting though to see it all happen, because history always repeats itself....

  4. I agree with Danielle. I think they would face an extraordinary amount of discrimination and I think they would be treated as though there purpose is to serve Americans and that they are easily "replaceable." It is pretty scary to think that this is an issue that is getting to be something that could be happening sooner than we think.

  5. My question is, how would we know that someone is a clone or the real deal? And if we could actually produce clones, what exactly would be unhuman about them? Wouldn't they just belike identical twins....two people with identical DNA?
