Pedro and Me Deep Question

Early on in the story, Judd feels guilty for being fearful about the prospect of residing with an HIV positive roommate. The year was 1994. Since that time, the world has made great strides in AIDS/HIV education and awareness. Nonetheless, do you think most people would feel differently today, 17 years later?

  1. I feel that most people would still have an initial reaction of being frightened, but would probably rebound a little more quickly from this reaction. Today there is a lot more knowledge and resources about AIDS/HIV so it would be much easier to educate oneself even with the ever expansive use of the internet. I would hope that considering the strides that have been made with knowledge and treatment people wouldn't hesitate to educate themselves or would not wait for someone else to educate them. It is my hope that we have become more open minded as a society in the past 17 years.

  2. This would depend on how educated the individual is on the topic of HIV. In reality, this is not really a topic that is taught much in schools. Yes, the education is out there, but many do not take the time to discover it on their own time. Sadly, I feel like many people in the general population (uneducated) would be reluctant to agree to have a roommate with HIV/AIDS. A more open-minded individual would be apt to educate themselves on the topic before dissenting. I just honestly feel there would still be some hesitation.

  3. I think there would be some hesitancy in the beginning for most people. Living with a person with a communicable disease would be a big change for a lot of people, and it would take some time to adjust. However, I think most people would have better access to information about AIDS/HIV than before, and hopefully that would make the transition easier for both parties.

  4. I do think that most people would feel differently today because we are much more educated about AIDS/HIV then we use to be. I do think that you would need to be able to talk openly with your new roommate so that any questions or concerns could be addressed in the beginning.
