Pedro and Me: Deep Question

During the period of time when Pedro Zamora was speaking on HIV/AIDS it was a very new concept to most people. It was often taught and thought that it was contracted mainly through unprotected homosexual relation. HIV/AIDS awareness was most always taught connected to a unit on lifestyle choices. What effect do you think this had on the topic in the minds of the learners, if any? Do you think homosexuality should be discussed in direct connection with HIV/AIDS during a lesson?

  1. I don't think HIV/AIDS need to be, nor should be, taught in connection with homosexuality because we now know that it is not a "homosexual" disease. Teaching them simultaneously may give students the impression that they are connected. Sexual identity and orientation are separate matters.

  2. I agree with Kathy! HIV/AIDS affects millions of people, many of whom are not homosexuals! I do however believe that it should be taught in conjunction with safe sex practices.

  3. I agree with both Kathy and Emily as well. While statistics early on showed the majority of reported cases were from homosexual relationships, we were not educated enough to know that there are SEVERAL factors that can contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS. In my opinion, I feel like when this disease started getting a lot of attention with Greg Louganis and then with Pedro it's almost as if the country used it as a catalyst to denounce homosexuality. It was just another reason for them to say that it was "wrong" to be homosexual. It took cases like Ryan White and Magic Johnson for us to realize that it is not just a "homosexual" disease, and to really start to educate doctors and the people of the dangers and severity of this disease.

  4. I agree with everyone. I feel that we have come a long way since the days of HIV/AIDS being a homosexual disease however I do think that it is important to continue teaching along with safe sex practices that it is not a homosexual disease because the stigma is still out there and the more we know the less afraid we have to be.
