Persepolis Deep Question

On page 133, Marjane is accosted by the women's branch of the Guardians of the Revolution. They criticize her for not dressing like a proper Muslim woman and wearing western, decadent clothes. So how does religion influence Iranian society in Persepolis and how does religion influence society in America?

  1. Religion directly influenced the Iranian society in Persepolis, if it weren't for religion Marjane wouldn't have been stopped that day and her and the rest of the women of the country wouldn't be forced to wear the veils they do. Even the men of the country were affected by the imposed religiously of the country with regards to dress. They had to wear long sleeves so as not to tempt the women of the country with their arm hair and shaving was frowned upon. Religion seems to be a heated debate no matter where you go so it comes as no surprise that it influences American society. The separation of church and state didn't naturally happen, it happened because there was controversy, debate and change. Religion is deeply rooted to the founding fathers of our society so although today we are much more liberal and free with our believes some of our fundamental values are grounded in initial religious roots.

  2. Persepolis Deep Question:
I only had the first half of the book so my question directly relates to that section of the story. As we read it seems Marjane is very confused with all the politics that is swirling around her and hears one thing from the media and a completely different thing from her parents and friends. This isn't an uncommon situation or feeling as a young adult. It is hard to find a personal solid footing in your political ideologies and beliefs with out being heavily influenced by family or mainstream ideals. Is this something you struggled with? Do you remember when you started to make sense of this struggle that most people experience when finding themselves within their society? How did you find your view point in the midst of so many strong opinions?
